Roman Catholic Mission is prepared
to forego all claims to the building
grant of $6,000 (six thousand dollars)
approved last year on account
of St. Joseph's College; and to receive
that amount as compensation:
provided that it be handed to the
Mission to use for general
Mission work as it (the Mission)
may see fit.

This last proposal is clearly inadmissible on the grounds
stated by the Colonial Treasurer (Mr. Lister) in the annexed
memorandum (Enclosure Memorandum); and for other reasons
that might be adduced.
Your Lordship's despatch
No. 81 of 12 July 1881, did not
prescribe what sum should be
allowed for the services of an Anglican Chaplain at the Civil Hospital, Gaol etc., when the present
Colonial Chaplaincy shall be discontinued on the death or
resignation of the existing incumbent. I am informed by
the Military Authorities that the Roman Catholic Chaplain to the troops
